iPhone iOS5 unable to enter DFU mode [Solved]
By nick | iPhone, Tech Support4 Nov 2011
Having recently installed iOS5 on my iPhone 4, I was in a position where I had to reboot my iPhone whilst out and about. Sadly at the time of writing this there’s only a tethered jailbreak for iOS5 for the iPhone 4.
What this means is that I have to have the iPhone connected to a computer everytime I boot, therefore I always try and avoid rebooting! Luckily whilst I was out I had my netbook with me, so I downloaded the latest version of redsn0w and tried to enter DFU mode.
I must have tried 10 times to enter DFU mode, all resulted in the iPhone just displaying a black screen and the computer not detecting it. I’m not new to this sort of thing so was a little puzzled.
When I returned home using the same hardware, I installed iTunes and this problem was suddenly fixed — I didn’t even need for itunes to be launched, just for it to be installed before the computer would recognise the iphone.
If your iPhone won’t enter DFU mode and you’re sure you’re pressing the keys in the correct combination, starting with the phone being off, make sure iTunes is installed!
Let me know if this helps you.

This worked for me. Thanks
every time i try to enter dfu mode it will not work it just boot s up and will not enter dfu. i dont think i am doing anything worng i hold the power button for 3 sec than both for 10 sec than the home for 15. so i dont now why iit wont work for me .
My iPhone continuously reboots when trying to enter DFU mode. What works for me is this:
Plug the iPhone into the computer
Hold down the top button and home button until the phone turns off
Then quickly before it comes back on again, hold down the top button for three seconds
Whilst holding the top button, press and hold the home button for 12 seconds (or 3 seconds after the screen goes blank)
Then release the top button
Hopefully Windows has detected the phone at this point, you can then run redsnow
Make sure itunes is closed whilst doing this, I hope this helps! Otherwise you may want to check out youtube, there’s plenty of videos.
iTunes did it, thanks for sharing.
