Google, give me back my email!

In recent times it seems Google’s web based email service Gmail is having problems more frequently than it’s ever known.   Tonight I thought I’d post something about it as it really gets frustrating when you’re trying to access your mail and all you can access is a Google error page.  I’ve been happily using Gmail to host the mail for my primary domain for the best part of a year and over all I’m quite impressed with how everything works.

Being able to search for your mail is great although it did take a awhile to get used to this concept.  Having used emails for a good ten years with traditional email clients I’m still getting used to having lots of stuff living in my inbox, even if it is read!

Giving a third party full access to your email doesn’t feel good, Google are known to give various authorities full access to email accounts upon request, running your own email service will certainly make “their” work a little harder.

In 2008 I found a great web based email client project named RoundCube, this project is still in development and has been the best free and open source Ajax client I’ve yet to find.  The early releases had a few bugs which made using it as a full time client a little annoying but it has come a long way over the years.  I’d like to see myself switching back to this sort of service in a year or ttwo when the project has matured and once again have full control over when my email service will be accessible!

Google sucks and we all know it — I really can’t understand why Google has so many fanboys, how are they really any better than Microsoft?
